Notes & Noticias: Less than 50 days…

We are less than 50 days away from Election Day. While my own race may not be the highlight of the season, it is critical that House District 51 turns out in large numbers to make sure Wendy Davis, Leticia Van de Putte and all progressive Democrats are represented up and down the ballot. Every Democratic elected official should be pulling their own weight to contribute to across-the-board victory in November, and I do not intend to let down. Join me for a fundraiser this Monday, September 22, at Hops & Grain Brewery.

On Tuesday, I joined Senator Kirk Watson in sponsoring our annual Diez y Seis de Septiembre Celebration. All Texans — all Tejanos — share a spirit that is unique to our state and envied around the world. We are independent. We are free. We are proud. This pride wasn’t born during the Texas Revolution in 1835. It is an element that runs much deeper. It is the same pride that inspired Don Miguel Hidalgo to cry for Mexican freedom and liberty in 1810.

We honored that tradition with mariachis, conjunto music, danza azteca and folclórico dance. I am pretty sure the noise was heard in every office for a several mile radius! Her excellency, the Consul General of Mexico Rosalba Ojeda, joined us to deliver El Grito — the traditional yell for independence. Be sure to check out the photos on the Austin-American Statesman here.

Senator Van de Putte believes that every hard-working Texas student deserves an opportunity to go to college, whether to obtain a work certificate, technical education, training, associates or bachelors degree.

Be sure to support her for a rally on the last leg of her Texas Promise Tour in the heart of District 51 this Saturday, September 20 at5:30 p.m. at the ACC Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road, 78702. Let’s give her a warm Austin welcome as we hear about her plans to expand access to meaningful career/higher education.

Last week, I addressed a delegation of Mexican business leaders and entrepreneurs at theCreativeWeekMXATX14 Exchange about the importance of Austin in the regional and international economy. With world-class research, groundbreaking entrepreneurship and a well-educated workforce, we are ripe for investment and exchange with not only Mexico, but all of Latin America. It was an honor to welcome them to our hometown and to encourage them to spend their capital right here in Central Texas.
