Campaign Season Has Begun!

Friends,

Now that the Labor Day weekend is behind us, campaigns are kicking into high gear through Election Day. Everyone will need to get involved if we want to see Wendy, Leticia and our entire Democratic ticket in office next year. The Travis County Democratic Party is hiring field organizers and paying up to $14 per hour. To set up an interview, please call (512) 728-VOTE or email them info@TravisCountyDemocrats.org.

Texas Shouldn’t Shut Doors on Economic Opportunities

I am very disappointed that Texas has lost out on a multi-billion dollar Tesla ‘gigafactory’ that would have brought thousands of new jobs to our state — and an opportunity to join Tesla as a leader in the electric vehicle market. Last session, I sponsored HB 3351, which would have allowed Tesla to sell direct to consumers. I don’t know what role the current restrictions for direct sales played in Tesla’s decision to choose Nevada over Texas, but we can certainly cut down on the red tape.

I remain hopeful. Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk envisions the need for many more gigafactories across the country, which means many more high-paying jobs. Accordingly, I plan to file my bill again next session so that our door will be open to future opportunities. I am confident that Texas will be the future site of its own gigafactories with the right leadership.

Diez y Seis de Septiembre

Mexican Independence Day is a big source of pride and a lot of fun. That is why Senator Kirk Watson and I are excited to be teaming up again for our annual Diez y Seis de Septiembre Celebration in the Capitol Rotunda.

We will have mariachis, baile folclórico and El Grito. The event will be free and open to the public on September 16 at noon. Please join us and spread the word!

Protecting the Middle Class

At a press conference this morning, my friend and Austin City Councilman Mike Martinez announced several initiatives to address the financial burden our low- and middle-income families are facing in Austin today.

Among his proposals is a plan to provide a flat rate homestead exemption for Austin homeowners, in addition to the current percentage-based option, along with a cap on the overall exemption amount. This type of exemption structure would bring relief to low- and middle-income residents struggling to keep up with skyrocketing property taxes.

I filed a bill last session to allow local governments to offer a flat rate exemption and will do so again this session. Our homeowners need relief, and they need it now. I’m glad to have Councilman Martinez on my side and theirs.

Regards,
EDDIE
