Notes & Noticias: Many May Celebrations

The weather was perfect for this year’s Cinco de Mayo weekend. On Monday, I joined other elected officials outside of City Hall to commemorate this special day in Mexican history, watch some baile folclórico and listen to great mariachi music. Fortunately, the fun is not over! Julieta Venegas, El Gran Silencio and other great artists will be performing at the Pachanga Latino Music Festivalin the heart of HD-50 at Fiesta Gardens, and I hear that tickets are still on sale.

Great Texas Women

On Tuesday, Christine and I attended the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame Awards in the Senate Chamber, where 9 outstanding female leaders from across the state were honored for their lifetime achievements. The inductees included Secretary of State Nandita Berry, Col. Kim Olson, First Lady Anita Perry and my friend, State Representative Senfronia Thompson of Houston. Honored in memoriam were those who are no longer with us, including Austinites Andrea Sloan and Anne McAfee. Past inductees have included Olympic athletes, astronauts and other extremely accomplished women in public service.

Swabfest for a Great Cause

Have you heard about swabfest? It is a great event that seeks to find donors for the thousands of blood cancer patients in need of a transplant.

A longtime Austinite, Brady Oman, has been diagnosed with a form of Leukemia called ALL and is in need of a stem cell transplant. The Oman family and friends are partnering with Delete Blood Cancer to help Brady find a match.

To be the “Biggest Swabfest in Texas,” they need roughly 2,200 donors to join them on Thursday May 8. The swab process should only take about 10 minutes, and you can listen to some cool bands while you wait!

Come to swabfest, and together we can help Brady and others searching for a donor to beat cancer.

Thanks again for reading Notes and Noticias. I look forward to seeing you in the community!
