Notes & Noticias: A Strong Slate

Dear Friends,

Filing for the 2014 primaries ended this past Monday, and I am happy to report that I do not have a Republican opponent this cycle! I am excited to dedicate my full energy to electing the entire statewide Democratic slate.

Below, read more about Texas Democrats’ great recruiting successes this year, and find out what’s going on in our community.

A Strong Slate As Diverse as Our State

Texas Democrats have our strongest slate of statewide candidates since 2002, headlined by Senators Wendy Davis for Governor and Leticia Van de Putte for Lieutenant Governor.

I’m excited that many strong candidates have filed to join them on the ballot, including Sam Houston for Attorney General, Mike Collier for Comptroller, and four statewide judicial candidates. These candidates give voters a real choice between the failed policies of the Republican Party and the potential to move our state forward.

Congratulations to TDP Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa and all of his hard-working staff on a great recruiting effort.

Our ticket is as diverse as our state, and demonstrates the broad coalition of Texans working together to bring real leadership to our state government.

Furthermore, almost three dozen Democratic candidates are challenging Republican incumbents in the Legislature. Texans deserve a State House that is responsive to their needs, and prioritizes access to education, health care, and equal rights.

I am glad that voters will have a choice in terms of which candidates can best address these priorities.

I look forward to working as hard as I can to support our statewide slate, and encourage all of you to join me in donating, volunteering, and spreading the word.

Finally, I’d also like to congratulate my friend Karin Crump, who did not draw an opponent in her race for the 250th District Court, from which the legendary Judge John Dietz is retiring. Karin will make an excellent jurist, and I am glad to have endorsed her.

CLEAT “Best of the House” Award

This week, I was honored and humbled to win the Combined Law Enforcement Agencies of Texas award for my work this legislative session in working to protect law enforcement officers. I’m proud to continue to keep fighting to protect pensions.

Our brave first responders deserve our unwavering support. I am committed to continue holding the line for those who put their lives on the line for us. I appreciate this recognition for work that I so gladly do.

Dove Springs on the House Tree

Every year, constituents donate ornaments to decorate the Christmas tree in the Capitol.

This year, I was so pleased to receive an ornament made by children in the Dove Springs Community Youth Development Program. It looks great, and serves as a reminder of the constituents who I am so privileged to serve.

Dove Springs has had a rough couple of months due to severe flooding. This ornament is a symbol of the determination of the community to rebuild, and creativity and spirit that continues to thrive in the neighborhood despite difficult circumstances.

Thanks to Ricardo Zavala for all of his hard work with this program and continued commitment to Dove Springs.

That wraps up another edition of Notes and Noticias! I look forward to seeing you in the community soon.
