N&N – Photo ID

Welcome to Notes and Noticias!

Dear Friends,

Early voting for our November elections begins in less than three weeks. The Republicans’ photo voter ID law is currently in effect. I oppose this law, but I’m committed to making sure that every Texas voter can get the ID they need.

Do you have what you need to be able to vote? The following is list of approved forms of photo ID:

  • Texas Driver License issued by Texas DPS
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate (EIC) issued by DPS
  • Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
  • Texas Concealed Handgun License issued by DPS
  • U.S. Military ID Card containing the person’s photograph
  • U.S. Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • U.S. Passport

Except for the citizenship certificate, all IDs must be current or no more than 60 days expired.

No photo ID is required for individuals who vote by mail.

Below, read more on how you can get an ID this week in Travis County, and in our “Spotlight On” feature, meet Ricardo Zavala, who works with young people to prepare them to succeed in life.

When Republicans in the Legislature passed their photo voter ID law in 2011, they rejected countless Democratic amendments that would have made implementation of the law more efficient and straightforward.

Now, the Texas Department of Public Safety is picking up the tab for the photo voter ID law — even though Republicans claimed it would have no fiscal note.

This week and next, DPS will be staffing mobile ID sites across Travis County. If you don’t have an acceptable photo ID, please visit these locations and get yours so you’re ready to go!

Election ID’s are available without charge to qualified Texas voters who do not already have an approved form of photo ID.

I’m glad that these mobile election ID stations will be in the district. Make sure you’re good to go, then check with family and friends. Let’s make sure this Republican photo voter ID bill doesn’t disenfranchise our community.

Spotlight On: Ricardo Zavala

Our youth need all of the help they can get to prepare themselves for the future.

Thankfully Austin has Ricardo Zavala working hard every day to make sure disadvantaged young adults in our community stay on a path to success.

Ricardo is the City of Austin’s Community Youth Development program coordinator, where he oversees efforts to keep kids in the 78744 zip code out of the juvenile justice system. His programs are a tremendous success — 100% of all youth involved in CYD programs have stayed out of the juvenile justice system, and participants report a 96% satisfaction rate.

Ricardo’s program is not just about keeping kids out of trouble, but also preparing kids to succeed, through developing leadership qualities, conflict-resolution skills, and goal-setting. Our entire community benefits from his work to invest in our young people and keep them on a path to a bright future.

Outside of his work with youths, Ricardo started “Dove Springs Proud,” a group of individuals and organizations that work in the neighborhood to create positive change.

I appreciate everything Ricardo does for young people in District 51 and across our community.

Thanks for reading another edition of Notes & Noticias! I look forward to seeing you in the community.

Sincerely,
Eddie
